Operation Justice

Monday May 2nd 2011 the British public arose to heavy heads and sore bank balances after another inebriated bank holiday weekend. The USA was awaking to a different kind of vibe, death to put in bluntly and it was celebrated with all the glee of a 5 year old at Christmas. Osama Bin Laden had been executed by American Seals. A solemn time for reflection then maybe? No. In fact it was time for mass crowds to gather in the streets and celebrate the death of the face of terrorism. To America, Bin Laden represented not only the large loss of life on September 11th but an inadequacy to apprehend a fugitive. They felt as if they had lost all manor of respect and power which would not be regained until justice was served, Yank style. Bush had failed but the term of Obama was plotting a plan to take down the super terrorist.

A professional hit was planned and performed with all the clout worthy of a blockbuster and a welcome boost was dished out to the waining Obama residence. His time as president is now being defined by the killing of Osama and it is seen to justify his inclusion as President. The victory for Obama almost seems as if he pistol whipped Osama and then unloaded a magazine into his skull himself.

How to serve justice could be debated for centuries. When murders are committed families grieve lost loved ones and blue collar policemen work day and night to capture the offender. When the subsequent court case ensues the jury's debate and discuss rights and wrongs and the judge decides on how justice will be served. When justice is served families either criticise the system for its flaws or rejoice in conviction. Bringing perpetrators of murder to justice is a difficult task but deciding on punishment for mass murderers and other crimes against humanity is an entire different spectrum of problems. One which has no definitive answer. Unless in the grand old land of hope and glory who see death as a pivotal part of the process.

Death sentences in America are still dished out to law breakers and is seen as a fitting way to deal with their most vicious of criminals. Death can bring finality to a family who have been part of the long legal process as can jail sentences but ultimately will it bring any relief. Time will also show if the death of Osama will bring any relief and joy, or will it just further enrage the east and continue a tit for tat battle which ultimately produces no winners and guarantees more sorrow and loss.
